Velashape II is an effective, non-invasive way to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, but there are plenty of ways you can keep your skin smooth and free of dimples at home to prolong your Velashape II results and enjoy smoother, firmer, healthier skin.

Drink Plenty of Water

We hear this one all the time, and tend to pay it little mind, but drinking water consistently throughout the day is excellent for your health in general, and especially for your skin. Keeping up a steady intake of water helps your body better flush out waste and keeps your skin hydrated. In addition to maintaining a healthy diet, with minimal intake of junk or processed foods, water consumption makes your body most efficient at doing its job of keeping healthy blood flow and moving out waste, helping to prevent cellulite formation.

Keep up an Exercise Routine

As cellulite forms when pockets of fat push against tight bands under the skin, keeping a healthy weight and building muscle is essential for minimizing cellulite after your Velashape II treatments. Working to tone problems areas, such as the buttocks and backs of legs, can assist in the long-run in the fight against cellulite.

Utilize Appropriate Topical Skin Creams

The application of anti-cellulite skin creams is an important step to keeping a smoother figure. An essential part of our patient education process is informing Velashape II users how they can best incorporate the right skin products between visits. Our team of technicians can recommend the best regimen for your goals.

Maintain a Velashape II Treatment Schedule

In addition to healthy habits at home, one of the most effective ways to fight cellulite through medical spa treatments is to keep up with a consistent schedule of care. At Newport Beach MedSpa’s two locations, you can return for touch ups every three months or so (or as many as your choose), to keep your skin smooth and free of the appearance of cellulite. Our Velashape II Membership keeps you in shape all year long.

Questions about Velashape II?

If you have further questions about how Velashape II works or how you can keep your skin looking cellulite-free all year long, contact us today for your consultation or appointment.

Reading reviews about the NeoGraft® procedure online will confirm why it’s becoming so many patients’ first choice for hair restoration. Compared to traditional hair restoration that involve grafts and surgical processes, the FUE method of restoring hair provides patients with more natural looking results and the most gentle way to replace thinning hair.

Our Newport Beach hair transplant patients love NeoGraft® FUE hair transplants because they offer:

Improved Comfort – No cutting and no surgical processes means less discomfort and better patient tolerance. Most patients experience only minor swelling and felt comfortable going back to their daily routine after treatment. Many individuals who choose the NeoGraft® procedure report the process as being completely comfortable with the help of local anesthetic and state that the recovery period was also far more manageable than they imagined.

Better Overall Treatment Experience – Patients report former methods of hair restoration as being unnecessarily invasive and producing results that look unnatural. Compared to the strip method of hair transplantation, pieces of skin and scalp are not removed with the FUE method. Patients who had previously chosen the strip method are pleasantly surprised by the overall non-invasiveness of the NeoGraft® procedure so much so that they were eager to return for additional treatments to more comprehensively replace lost or thinning hair.

Speedier Recovery – Because NeoGraft® technology transplants individual hair follicles, instead of using large donor patches of skin, there is far less downtime associated with treatment. Patients love that getting a hair restoration does not have to be a major event that requires they carve out time in their schedules to recover from surgery. NeoGraft® FUE hair transplant patients do not have to deal with large, embarrassing scars.

Life-Changing Results – Years ago, pursuing treatment for thinning hair meant running the risk that plugs  or strip hair restoration would leave your hair or hairline looking obviously altered. NeoGraft® technology is able to provide life-changing results by allowing your hair to look as natural as possible. Patients feel confident knowing that their restored hair does not show tell-tale signs of transplanting.

Minimizing fat deposits is a problem that modern cosmetic procedures have been able to make more comfortable and efficient. Among the most effective ways to reduce pockets of fat in problem areas on your body is liposuction. In recent years, liposuction has been advanced with the help of laser technology. Laser liposuction is the gentler way to predictably remove fat accumulation and has the extra added benefit of producing collagen from under the skin which promotes skin tightening.

How Does Laser Liposuction Work?

Lasers are utilized in fat removal treatments to facilitate the easier removal of fat cells. Traditionally, in standard liposuction procedures, fat cells are removed through the use of a back and forth suctioning motion.  This treatment method will indeed remove fat cells in the treated area, but the force of motion needed to successfully remove fat can create discomfort or leave the surface of skin less smooth than desired.

Using a laser in conjunction with traditional liposuction tools  allows fat to be removed in a way that is gentler on tissue. The laser first liquefies fat so that it can be suctioned without force. While the general process for fat removal with laser is the same – a cannula, or small tube, is inserted through into treatment areas to remove fat cells – the addition of the laser makes all the difference in terms of patient experience and procedure outcomes.

Laser Technology for the Benefit of Successful Fat Removal

Lasers are now used in a variety of medical treatments, from dentistry to cosmetic surgery for fat removal. Utilizing varying wavelengths, lasers can target different tissues for more efficient treatment. Liposuction lasers utilize a wavelength that can help to specifically and more easily treat fat cells while creating minimal disruption for skin. Lasers also generally assist in the treatment healing process, as they seal tissue, promoting a more comfortable recovery period with less bleeding and bruising.

Laser assisted fat removal surgery helps to deliver the kinds of results that patients are looking for -- sleeker silhouettes with smooth skin that looks and feels natural.

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive body-sculpting procedure that targets and removes body fat in a highly specific way. It can be a good method of losing inches when diet and exercise alone aren't getting the results you want.

Why Choose CoolSculpting®?

Selecting the best fat removal methods depends on a number of factors. While there are other methods of fat removal—such as liposuction—that are capable of removing more fat than CoolSculpting®, but there are some big advantages to opting for the CoolSculpting® procedure.
The key feature that defines CoolSculpting® is its ability to remove small amounts of fat from very specific locations. If you have stubborn fat that diet and exercise haven't been able to eliminate, CoolSculpting® might be a good option.

In contrast to other, more extensive fat removal procedures, CoolSculpting® uses a hand piece to non-invasively remove excess fat. There are no incisions, no need for anesthetic, no downtime, and no recovery time required, as there is with weight-loss surgery or liposuction. And because CoolSculpting® is non-invasive, it's virtually risk-free.

Is CoolSculpting® Right for You?

The CoolSculpting® procedure works best for people who are at or close to their target weight, but who want to refine their body shape by removing bulges in key areas. Because CoolSculpting® doesn't remove large amounts of fat, it's not a substitute for weight loss, and may not be the not the best choice if you want to lose a significant amount of weight.

Another important factor relates to how the fat is distributed on the body. For CoolSculpting® to provide desired results, the fat should be in a relatively small area and loose enough that it can be accessed by the CoolSculpting® hand piece which freezes fat cells to eliminate them from the body.

CoolSculpting® is right for you if you're not significantly overweight or if you have small pockets of fat that diet and exercise haven't been able to remove, such as the love handles, under the arms, or on the lower abdomen.

For more information about non-surgical body sculpting at our Newport Beach, CA med spa, contact our office to schedule your consultation.

Baby, it’s cold outside! This harsh winter weather can take its toll on your skin, but don’t worry – here are 5 tips to help keep your skin as soft as possible this winter season.
  1. Add extra moisture.
Even if you consistently hydrate your skin, consider moisturizing more often or even switching to a heavier moisturizer during these cold days.  Our Hydrate Luxe may be one to check out –its balm-like texture helps provide extra-rich moisturization.  Both Hydrate and Hydrate Luxe feature the ingredient Hydromanil and can deliver moisture that lasts throughout the day.1
While you’re at it, remember to keep your lips hydrated with a moisturizing lip balm with skin protecting ingredients to help prevent chapping.
  2. Stay warm.
Pretty obvious, right? But still essential. Do what you can to remain warm this winter: this means bundling up when you go outside, heating your house/room when necessary, and using a humidifier if you live in a dry climate. Your skin will thank you for taking this easy step in these colder months!
  3. Up the fatty acids in your diet.
Foods that contain a good dose of healthy fats – including almonds, walnuts, salmon, and olive oil – may help keep your skin hydrated.2 These are also superfoods that can help your heart health…so they’ll work double duty for you in winter!
  4. Cool it with the baths.
Baths can be very relaxing and warming when it’s so cold out, but try to limit them this winter, and keep the water warm – not hot. Using hot water in your bath or shower can actually break down the lipid barriers in skin, which may result in moisture loss and can dry out your skin.3
  5. Don’t forget sunscreen!
Just because you can’t see the sun as much in winter doesn’t mean it can’t affect your skin. In fact, UVA sun rays (which can penetrate into deeper levels of the skin and contribute to skin aging) are present year-round and can pierce through glass and clouds.4 So, when we say it’s best to use a broad spectrum sunscreen every day, we mean EVERY DAY – winter included.
There you go – these 5 easy steps may make a difference between dry, chapped skin and more hydrated, softer skin this winter. Tell us in the comments below what helps keep your skin moisturized when it’s cold outside!

The expression “you are what you eat” may be more accurate than you think. There are many factors that contribute to the clear, glowing, blemish-free skin everyone strives for (including genetics). Some foods—depending on their vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant content—can actually help promote healthy skin. We searched the web for meals that contain two or more foods with properties known to protect or repair skin. (But keep in mind, though studies suggest certain foods can protect our skin or repair damage, they're not a substitute for preventative measures like sunscreen.) From quinoa for breakfast to lots of dark chocolate for dessert, here are 26 ways to eat your way to better skin.
1. Blueberry and Walnut Smoothie
Blueberries, one of nature’s most potent antioxidant-containing fruits, provide the color for this simple, healthy smoothie. If you don’t have walnuts on hand to whip up homemade walnut milk, choose your favorite variety of milk (but keep in mind that some studies link whey-protein-based dairy to skin conditions, including acne, thanks to its insulin-boosting abilities) . If you can’t make walnut milk, try throwing a few whole walnuts in there anyways—they contain a healthy dose of magnesium, which is important for healthy blood flow in the skin .
2. Quinoa Breakfast Cereal with Berries and Almonds
Your typical morning breakfast may feature oatmeal, but switch things up with quinoa for an extra dose of protein. Whole grains, including quinoa, are a rich source of selenium, which can improve skin elasticity . Blueberries are high in anthocyanins (one of many antioxidants, which fight off the damage in our bodies caused by free radicals). Almonds are a high source of vitamin E, known to protect our skin from the sun’s rays  .

3. Kale, Apple, Raspberry, and Goji Green Smoothie
Sip your way to healthy skin with this superfood-packed smoothie. Leafy green kale contains high levels of vitamin K, an essential vitamin known to suppress inflammation (which can result in acne or wrinkles) . Chewy, tangy, and sweet goji berries are a rich source of antioxidants, known to ward off the signs of photoaging (aging of the skin often caused by sun damage), including liver spots, freckles, and spider veins . Apples are also a healthy-skin super-fruit; Fuji and Red Delicious rank highest for antioxidants .
4.Pumpkin Pie Baked Oatmeal
This fall-friendly breakfast is warm and comforting, but it also features two healthy skin-promoting foods: oats and pumpkin. Foods high on the glycemic index (which measures how much a specific food raises blood sugar levels when consumed) can increase inflammation, and as a result, wreak havoc on our skin . High GI foods (like white bread, for instance) spike blood sugar levels because the body digests them very quickly, while low GI foods, like oatmeal digest slowly . Pumpkin, on the other hand, has loads of beta-carotene, a provitamin that converts to vitamin A (known to improve aged skin) .
5. Kale Salad With Pomegranate Seeds and Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette
Perfect for a light lunch or side salad, this healthy skin medley features kale, avocado, quinoa, pomegranate seeds, pecans, goat cheese, and a homemade Meyer lemon vinaigrette. Leafy greens, especially kale, are high in antioxidants and vitamin K—both of which help the skin look young (antioxidants because they help slow down the process of aging, and vitamin K because it protects the skin’s elasticity). Pomegranate seeds boast super high levels of polyphenols (an antioxidant also found in cranberries) .
6.Nicoise Salad With Charred Fish
This hearty salad incorporates tons of Mediterranean staples, including fish, beans, green beans, olives, capers, and red bell pepper. Studies have found that the Mediterranean diet—composed primarily of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, beans, nuts, and olive oil—can protect against acne thanks to high fiber, antioxidant-rich, and Omega-3-packed foods (all of which help protect the skin from acne flair ups) .

7. Roasted Beet, Plum, and Kale Salad
Perfect for late summer or early fall, this colorful salad highlights beets, plums, and tomatoes. Beets contain the antioxidant betalain in a higher concentration than most vegetables, and research shows beets may also help reduce the risk for skin cancer . This salad also includes tomatoes, which are a great source of lycopene, an antioxidant found to reduce skin roughness . And to round things off, the antioxidant kaempferol—found in kale—may be therapeutic to skin burns .
8. Orange Fennel Salad With Date Vinaigrette
Topped with just fennel, onion, oranges, and walnuts, this salad is a cinch. Quercetin, an antioxidant found in fennel, has been found to help treat psoriasis (an inflammatory skin condition) as well as diminish fine lines and wrinkles . The sweet and spicy homemade dressing is a little more involved, but it’s easy to make up a big batch and freeze some for later. The dressing uses dates for sweetness rather than refined sugar (a known trigger for acne) .
Main Dishes
9. Zucchini Chickpea Burgers
This burger, made up primarily of chickpeas, quinoa, and grated zucchini also features a hearty serving of sunflower seeds. Foods high in vitamin E, including sunflower seeds, help prevent acne development and may help acne-scarred skin heal . Plus, zucchini is 95 percent water, and hydrated skin makes for healthy, supple skin . The green veggie is also a great source of Vitamin C, a nutrient required for healing damaged skin .

10. Lemon Herb Salmon
This recipe, featuring omega-3-rich salmon, is a healthy skin superstar not just for its nutritional profile, but also for its low-grease preparation—baking instead of frying. While consuming certain foods can affect our skin from the inside out, greasy food causes problems the second it touches our mouths. Grease from fried food that touches our faces is a recipe for clogged pores . Opting for baked recipes versus fried can reduce all that grease.
11. Almond Crusted Chicken With Raspberry Sauce
Crushed nuts replace breading as a gluten-free alternative to coat chicken and create a crispy outer crust. The almond-based crust contains high levels of vitamin E, which helps protect the skin from sun damage . The sauce uses onions and cherries, both of which have high concentrations of polyphenols, which help protect the skin from free radicals . For an even healthier sauce that’s better for the skin, try a homemade cherry compotethat uses less refined sugar (the sweet stuff has been linked to not-so-perfect skin) .
12. Sesame-Soy Salmon With Carrots and Edamame
This flavorful meal is quick and simple. Feel free to serve it over a bed of greens like bok choy or spinach. Salmon, rich in omega-3fatty acids, may help keep inflammation (which can show as redness on our skin) under control . The dish also features edamame (soybeans), which research links to wrinkle reduction .
13. Tuna Stuffed Bell Peppers
Though tuna is not the most typical main ingredient for stuffed peppers, it is a great source of selenium, an antioxidant that may protect skin from UV-induced damage . Plus, peppers have loads of Vitamin C, an antioxidant involved in the production of collagen, which helps maintain skin firmness .

14. Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup
This colorful soup gets its hue from two veggies known for improving skin health. Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, a skin healthy antioxidant. And cooking tomatoes actually increases the concentration of lycopene . Red peppers, on the other hand, are loaded with vitamin C—which is associated with better skin-aging appearance .
15. Roasted Carrot Soup
The main ingredient of this comforting fall soup—carrots—is an excellent source of vitamin A, which prevents the overproduction of cells in the skin’s outer layer (That means there are fewer dead cells hanging around to clog pores.)
16. Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili
This non-traditional chili incorporates gluten-free and vegetarian ingredients, including pepper, black beans, sweet potatoes, and—of course—lots of spice. Sweet potatoes have tons of Vitamin C, which is known to smooth the appearance of wrinkles . Plus, black beans are a good source of folic acid, an important nutrient for protecting the skin from damaging UV rays .
Snacks and Side Dishes
17. Roasted Eggplant, Red Pepper, and Garlic Spread
This simple but tasty spread features three good-for-the-skin ingredients: eggplant, garlic, and red pepper. Eggplant contains the antioxidant nasunin, known to protect cell membranes from damage, while garlic has been used as a remedy for skin diseases and dandruff . Finally, the veggie that gives this dip its bright red color, red pepper, staves off the effects of skin aging with high levels of vitamin C .

18.  Quinoa With Roasted Squash, Dried Cranberries, and Pepitas
For a simple fall salad, all it takes are some dried cranberries, cubes of roasted butternut squash, and toasted pepitas. Also known as pumpkin seeds, pepitas are an excellent source of zinc, which helps maintain collagen strength and promotes skin renewal . Eating plenty of whole grains, such as quinoa or farro, is a cheap and easy way to maintain healthy skin since they too have free radical-fighting antioxidants . The third and final main ingredient, cranberries, ranks highly among other fruits for both antioxidant quality and quantity .
19. Oysters on the Half Shell
There’s not much to this hors d’oeuvre, but kicking back oysters can provide a healthy dose of zinc (a necessary mineral to stave off a variety of skin problems, including acne and the skin disorder inflammatory dermatosis)
20. Red Grape and Chicken Salad Wraps
This no-cook snack wrap is refreshing and easy to compile. The sweet ingredient—red grapes—is a good source of the antioxidant anthocyanin, which helps maintain good circulation in the body as well as strengthen collagen (the basis for the structure of skin) .
21. Spinach Pumpkin Seed Energy Balls
No need for pricey pre-packaged energy bars when you can whip up your own nutritious, homemade version. These little bites combine mixed nuts, pumpkin seeds, dates, spinach, and cocoa. While all of these ingredients have healthy skin properties, spinach contains high levels of folate (a vitamin that may protect the skin from skin cancer) and nuts are chock full of the antioxidant flavonoids .
22. Sauteed Spinach With Garlic, Figs, and Honey
For a sweet and savory side, this garlicky spinach will do the trick. One of the main components of this dish, figs, contains flavonoids (the powerful antioxidant that may play a significant role in cellular aging in human skin) . The other sweet ingredient, honey, has antioxidants in the form of phenolic compounds . And to round things off at the antioxidant party, both spinach and garlic have tons of antioxidants.
23. Dark Chocolate Avocado Truffles
This sneaky dessert features a secret ingredient—avocadoes. The creamy green fruit contains high levels of pantothenic acid (also known as vitamin B5). A number of B vitamins, including B5, promote healthy skin by decreasing oil production and reducing the size of pores. .

24. Chocolate, Pomegranate, Ginger Bark
This super simple dessert melds sweet, tart, and spicy. The pomegranate seeds are a rich source of polyphenols, an antioxidant known to protect against the adverse effects of UV radiation . Chocolate contains flavonols, an antioxidant that protects the skin against UV rays . Look for dark chocolate with a cacao content above 70 percent for higher antioxidant power.
25. Granny Smith Apples With Dark Chocolate and Walnuts
Foods with high levels of fiber, like apples, can help the body flush out toxins, which can lead to inflammation and clogged pores. Constipation has also been linked to skin conditions like acne . But a high-fiber diet with adequate hydration will help keep things moving smoothly .
26. Dark Chocolate and Maca Fruit Bites
This sweet treat dresses up fruit with a maca-infused chocolate and nut coating. With zinc deficiency associated with a variety of skin problems (including acne), there’s no excuse not to eat zinc-rich dark chocolate . And studies show maca, a Peruvian root known for a host of health benefits, prevents ultraviolet induced skin damage .

5 Skin-Care Products You Should Never Use Together

With the list of "must-have" skin-care products growing by the minute, the list of ingredients you're putting on your skin is growing, too. It's no surprise that some just don't go together. Here, David Colbert, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist, points out which combinations you should always avoid.
Vitamin C + Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is an acne-clearing staple in many people's skin-care routines. Enter vitamin C, the trendy new kid in town that every dermatologist seems to be recommending. While you totally can (and should!) add vitamin C to your routine, Colbert warns not to use it with benzoyl peroxide. The topical treatment will oxidize the vitamin C, rendering the effects of both useless. Only use one on days you won't be using the other.

All acids are not created equal, and they all don't have the same effects on your skin. Salicylic acid is an acne treatment, and glycolic acid is an exfoliator that removes dead skin without your having to scrub away at it. Both are great ingredients, but when used together, they can seriously dry out your skin, says Colbert. Again, only use one at a time.
Retin-A + Gritty Exfoliants
Retin-A is an ingredient seriously loved by dermatologist for its ability to help skin renew itself; it helps treat wrinkles, discoloration, and overall roughness. Unfortunately, Retin-A has a tendency to dry out skin, causing it to peel. What better way to get rid of dry skin than removing it with an exfoliator, right? Wrong. Retin-A makes skin super-sensitive, and rubbing gritty exfoliants against it will only make the situation worse, says Colbert. Try a cleansing with a muslin cloth, which is a gentle way to buff away dead skin.

Sonic Brush + Exfoliants
When sonic brushes came on the scene, they were praised for their gentle exfoliation capabilities. But old habits die hard, and you may still have an exfoliator in your routine. If so, it's time to let go, says Colbert. You may be exfoliating too much, stripping your face of healthy oils, and roughing up your skin. It's either one or the other—you choose.
Retin-A + Toner
Toners are great for a multitude of reasons; some have glycolic acid that brings new skin to the surface, some contain witch hazel, which is great at treating acne. But when Retin-A is in your routine, Colbert warns against using them. "You wouldn't want to use them together over your whole face, otherwise it will dry our your skin," he says. Pick your favorite, and stick with it.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

I absolutely love this time of year! The lights, the colors, the sounds, and especially the food! It seems that between family get-togethers, company parties, and work activities, that there is never a shortage of delicious and yummy treats. This plethora of edible delights coupled with the fact that we are typically less active during December (what with the cold weather and all) and we have a recipe for complete disaster for any health and fitness plan. Don’t let the holiday season undermine your fitness goals this year! Today I am sharing 10 tips to help keep your holidays healthy, active and free from weight gain. Check them out:

1. Exercise

Absolutely the most obvious and yet sometimes the most difficult to adhere to is this idea of exercise during the holidays. It’s cold so we don’t go outside as much and certainly aren’t as active during the winter months compared to the summertime. Don’t let the cold weather keep you from exercising! If a gym membership isn’t in your budget there are plenty of incredible at-home workouts with minimal equipment required to keep you toned and tightened during the winter months!

2. Find a winter activity that you enjoy

Skiing, cross-country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice-skating, building a snowman, walking around the mall, etc., etc.! There are actually tons of ways that you can stay active during the winter. Sure, a lot of these outdoor activities require a little more planning and thought on your part, but with a little preparation you can actually make some pretty spectacular memories! Might I recommend snowshoeing or cross-country skiing to get you started— these are a couple of my favorite winter activities and a complete calorie burn!

3. Hate the cold? Find an indoor activity you enjoy!

Let’s face it— some people just don’t like to be cold or outside when it is cold. There are just as many indoor activities you can find that burn just as many calories as the outdoor activities! Racquetball, basketball, swimming, spinning, Zumba are all great ways to shred some calories while staying warm and toasty. The important thing is you find something that you can get excited about and stick with it all season long!

4. Plan time for yourself

If you’re anything like me you find your December rapidly filling up! In fact I was just looking at my calendar earlier today— we don’t have a free Saturday in December! It’s important that you schedule time for yourself RIGHT NOW before the month gets any busier. Schedule a workout, a hike, a run, a swim – whatever – for yourself and GET IT ON THE CALENDAR! That way you have it scheduled out and nothing else can get in the way. Consider it an appointment with yourself… and bosses don’t cancel.

5. Drink more water

Any time you find yourself headed to the cupboard for some good ol’ “bored eating” head to the sink instead! Drinking more water is a great way to fill up your stomach quicker without adding any calories at all! You’re supposed to be drinking 64 ounces per day (about 8 glasses); how many do you usually get?

6. Strength in numbers

Enlist someone with similar goals as you to be your workout buddy over the next 5 weeks. Go to the gym, go on your runs, and ask each other about your eating habits. Having someone there to whom you are accountable will increase your compliance and take your gains to a new level. Trust me— it’s a lot harder to snooze when you’ve got someone depending on you to be there with them at 6:30 a.m.

7. Eat a healthy snack before going to your holiday party

This is by far one of my favorite tips! About 30 minutes before you leave to go to your next holiday party grab a delicious healthy snack. A half peanut butter and jelly sandwich on wheat bread, some fruit, or even some carrot sticks with hummus will tide you over just enough to keep your eating in check while you’re at the party. From awesome fruit dips to amazing roasted vegetables.

8. Don’t hang out by the food table

Everyone likes to eat. Everyone also likes to socialize. Usually, people socialize around the serving table where there’s food readily available. Simply paying attention to your geography can make a huge difference in what you eat while at the party. Grab your plate of food and then move as far away from the serving table as you can. You will be less apt to snacking if you have to get up and walk across the room to get it!

9. Did I mention drinking water?

It’s going to be tough, but I know you can do it. My challenge to you this holiday season is this: Don’t Drink Your Calories. Cut out alcohol. Cut out soda. Cut out egg nog, hot chocolate, spiced cider, etc and reach for a big tall glass of water. This is honestly one of the quickest and easiest ways to save yourself 100-200 calories per meal! That may not seem like a lot, but cutting even 100 calories a day all month long will result in an entire pound of weight you didn’t gain over the month!

10. Allow yourself SOME indulgence

Okay, let’s be completely honest with each other for a minute. You’re not going to stick to every one of these this season (if you can— email me! I would love to hear about it!). Everyone should allow themselves a small cheat every now and then. The holiday season comes only once a year; along with that the holiday treats usually only come once a year! To miss them completely is not realistic; however, I think it’s completely realistic to expect moderation out of ourselves. If you do elect to indulge, try to follow some of the following guidelines:
  • Only one dessert per party
  • Share desserts with a friend! That way you’re still getting the treat and the sociality, but with only half the fat and calories!
  • Find the healthier option: fruit instead of chocolate. Even the small sugar cookie instead of the entire fudge brownie sundae can go a long way!
Don’t fall victim to the annual poundage this year! It will be a much sweeter and happier new year if you take the correct necessary steps right now to make the holidays not only happy, but healthy!

Cucumbers contain silica which is know to strengthen connective tissue.  Be sure to add cucumbers to your water bottle when you go to the gym to work out!

Cucumbers are full of water and encourages eliminations of wastes.  Plus, cucumbers help dissolve kidney stones.

We have all heard of cucumbers being used in facial masks and eye treatments, so it’s no surprise that Cucumber Water would help with skin care!

If you have a problem getting your water intake each day because you grow tired of plain water, drinking cucumber water can help you get more water into your diet.

Cucumbers are low in calories so adding a few slices to your water is a very low calorie drink.

Add some extra wow to your table by adding a pitcher of cucumber water when you have guests or company over for meals.

We can all slice cucumbers and throw them in a pitcher of water!  It really doesn’t get much easier than that!  Plus, cucumbers are fairly inexpensive to buy so this is a really cheap drink!

What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is the unsightly lumpy, dimpled (cottage cheese or orange peel) appearance of skin. Cellulite consists of fat deposits that appear primarily on the hips, thighs and buttocks. Cellulite is probably one of the most aesthetically troubling concerns of women – it is estimated that 80% of women over the age of 20 (regardless of their weight or size) are affected by cellulite

What causes Cellulite?

The skin’s connective tissue surrounds fat cells which are arranged in chambers. The walls of these chambers are called septae. Over time, fat cells increase in size and number and they, along with the accumulation of localized edema (tissue swelling), push the skin’s surface between the septae in an upward direction. This is what creates the lumpy and dimpled skin appearance associated with cellulite.

VelaShape™ treatments are initially best delivered in a series of 4 (once or twice weekly) sessions. Gradual improvement in skin tone and contour can be expected after a series of 4 treatment sessions, but maintenance treatments are often advocated in order to enhance the results. Maintenance sessions can be delivered singly or in repeat series depending on an individual’s clinical response and preference.
A good treatment candidate should be an individual who is in relatively good physical condition because VelaShape™ is not intended for weight loss.

VelaShape™ Highlights

Patients can return to daily activities immediately following treatment.
• Gradual smoothing of the skin’s surface is observed after a series of treatments with noticeable reduction in cellulite.

Today I’ve put together some healthy and detoxifying snack options that will boost your metabolism and keep you on track while you’re detoxing throughout the week.
When you get hungry in between meals, go to this list of my favorite snacks and drinks that will continue to cleanse your body all day long…

  • Asparagus:  Cooking up this veggie is a delicious and healthy snack, not just because it detoxifies the liver, but also because it helps your body to flush out all impurities. I love asparagus grilled or steamed, and eating it raw will help reduce bloating in your belly too!
  • Apples: This fruit is filling, satisfying and it can help suppress unhealthy cravings. If a sneaky sugar craving creeps up when you’re detoxing, grab an apple. Green apples are especially good for decreasing appetite.
  • Green Smoothie: While a large smoothie can be so filling that it becomes an entire meal (think breakfast), a smaller size smoothie is the perfect mid-meal snack. Blend up a smoothie that is about 1-½ cups, and be sure to include a leafy green like spinach or kale, chia seeds, lemon, and apple or pineapple. And…voila! You have yourself a glass of detox goodness. To see one of my favorite recipes, click here.
  • Homemade Trail Mix: A lot of trail mixes have sugary sweets like candy or chocolate included in the mix, making them less healthy option. But a homemade version could be just the kind of healthy snack that keeps your body energized. I recommend mixing pistachios, almonds, dried cranberries, and hemp seeds, which are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, protein, zinc, iron, potassium, and calcium. I also like to add dried goji berries, which are powerful antioxidants that are rich in Vitamin A.
  • Watermelon: Health experts claim that watermelon helps your liver and kidneys flush out impurities. Watermelon tea can do the trick too!
  • Pineapple: Pineapples are known for their abilities to cleanse the pores in your lungs and reduce stomach fat. Eat a few chunks of this sweet fruit on an empty stomach to reap the benefits of its powerful enzymes.
  • Chia Fresca: This drink from Oh She Glows is supposed to aid in detoxification in the body…especially the morning after a fun night out. Simply soak half a tablespoon of chia seeds in a glass of water for 10 minutes, then add a squirt of lime. Refreshing.
  • Grapefruit: Grapefruit also helps to curb hunger, but it doesn’t stop there. This citrus fruit boosts your metabolism and packs in a ton of vitamin C, good for fighting off colds and giving your skin a glow.
  • Celery: Celery is a great source of fiber, which means it can help move food through your digestive tract (World’s Healthiest Foods). Grab a few celery sticks and peanut butter for a heart-healthy snack that will leave you full and satisfied.
  • Avocados: Aside from lowering cholesterol, avocados contain a nutrient called glutathione, which blocks at least 30 different carcinogens while helping the liver detoxify synthetic chemicals (Care2). Add some of this green goodness to your smoothies or salads.
Now that you have ten good detox snack options, there are also some good detox drinks you can sip on all day long. If you remember my Sip This post, you might recall me saying that lemon water hydrates and energizes you, stimulates your liver, aids detoxification, and maximizes enzyme function. I recommend drinking a big glass of lemon water each morning before you make your smoothie.
Also, if you’re a coffee lovergreen tea is a great caffeine substitute that is much healthier for your body. It has a special compound in it that bumps up your metabolic rate and it helps your liver to eliminate toxins. It may even help prevent heart disease and certain cancers too! I drink a cup of green tea almost every day for a quick and easy detox boost.
These snacks are healthy, light options to eat in between meals throughout the day. If you have any detox snacks to add, feel free to leave them in the comments below! And be sure to check out my 3 Detox Approved Recipes as well.
Which of these snacks will you start adding to your diet?

What does it mean to have sensitive skin? For many, this overarching, and often vague, term can mean a number of things and cause some confusion. You may have asked, “Are there different types of sensitive skin?”, “Should everyone with sensitive use the same products?” The answers are that there are different types of sensitive skin, that only a dermatologist can confirm if you do have sensitive skin, and that only your doctor can determine which types of products are best to help your skin reach optimal health.
There are many skin conditions that can include aspects of sensitive skin — acne, rosacea and contact dermatitis (due to allergies and irritants) — and they all have one characteristic in common: inflammation1. To determine which type of sensitive skin you have, your skin care physician looks at several indicators, including the following conditions2:
Skin reactions such as pustules, skin bumps, or skin erosion
Very dry skin which doesn’t properly protect nerve endings in the skin
A tendency toward blushing and skin flushing
In addition to a number of skin reactions that signify sensitive skin, there are also a number of contributors. Causes of sensitive skin include1:
Skin disorders or allergic skin reactions such as eczema, rosacea, or allergic contact dermatitis
Overly dry or injured skin that can no longer protect nerve endings, leading to skin reactions
Excessive exposure to skin-damaging environmental factors such as sun and wind, or excessive heat or cold
Genetic factors, age, gender, and race differences in skin sensitivity are less well-defined but still may play a role in the severity of skin reactions
Each sensitive skin concern has its own treatment. That’s why working with a professional to determine which type of sensitive skin you have is so important. As you and your skin care physician work to address your sensitive skin, there are certain ingredients you should be aware of that can help calm sensitive skin and some ingredients you should avoid.
Sensitive skin care DOs:
Use Kinetin and Zeatin essential plant-derived growth factors found in our Gentle Rejuvenation System*, which is specifically designed for those with sensitive skin. Kinetin and Zeatin are proven to gently, yet effectively, improve skin’s appearance.
Use natural ingredients such as oatmeal to protect and soothe contact dermatitis; and other calming ingredients including licorice extract, caffeine, chamomile for rosacea1.
Sensitive skin care DON’Ts:
Avoid scents. Added fragrances can irritate the skin.
Avoid self-medicating. A helpful ingredient for one type of sensitivity may irritate another. Ensure you know which type of sensitive skin you have before using any of the suggested ingredients to treat your condition.
The first step in dealing with your sensitive skin is to visit your skin care physician. Obagi recently introduced the Gentle Rejuvenation System, our first system specifically designed for sensitive skin. Packed with gentle yet powerful ingredients, including Kinetin and Zeatin, the Gentle Rejuvenation System contains essential products to cleanse, calm, correct, and protect sensitive skin – ask your physician if it’s right for you.

In addition to a skin care regimen designed to treat your sensitive skin, be sure that you are using non-irritating cosmetics, protecting your skin against harsh elements, especially the sun, and avoiding foods or fabrics that may further irritate your skin.

This column appears in the May 12 issue of The New York Times Magazine.
Exercise science is a fine and intellectually fascinating thing. But sometimes you just want someone to lay out guidelines for how to put the newest fitness research into practice.
An article in the May-June issue of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal does just that. In 12 exercises deploying only body weight, a chair and a wall, it fulfills the latest mandates for high-intensity effort, which essentially combines a long run and a visit to the weight room into about seven minutes of steady discomfort — all of it based on science.
“There’s very good evidence” that high-intensity interval training provides “many of the fitness benefits of prolonged endurance training but in much less time,” says Chris Jordan, the director of exercise physiology at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Fla., and co-author of the new article.
Work by scientists at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and other institutions shows, for instance, that even a few minutes of training at an intensity approaching your maximum capacity produces molecular changes within muscles comparable to those of several hours of running or bike riding.
Interval training, though, requires intervals; the extremely intense activity must be intermingled with brief periods of recovery. In the program outlined by Mr. Jordan and his colleagues, this recovery is provided in part by a 10-second rest between exercises. But even more, he says, it’s accomplished by alternating an exercise that emphasizes the large muscles in the upper body with those in the lower body. During the intermezzo, the unexercised muscles have a moment to, metaphorically, catch their breath, which makes the order of the exercises important.
The exercises should be performed in rapid succession, allowing 30 seconds for each, while, throughout, the intensity hovers at about an 8 on a discomfort scale of 1 to 10, Mr. Jordan says. Those seven minutes should be, in a word, unpleasant. The upside is, after seven minutes, you’re done.

A version of this article appears in print on 05/12/2013, on page MM20 of the NewYork edition with the headline: The Scientific 7-Minute Workout.

Stand firm in the face of gravity.
Few things are as inevitable as gravity's toll on your skin. One day, all of a sudden, reality stares you square in the face. You might initially think it's because you did not sleep well the previous night, but eventually you admit that an afternoon nap is not going to solve this issue. It’s a bona fide eyebrow droop!
Non-surgical methods to treat laxity of the face and neck are among the most sought-after solutions in aesthetic medicine. Many technologies to tighten the skin have been introduced in the past, and a variety claim to achieve skin tightening. Yet none have been shown to be consistent and reproducible, and many patients leave dissatisfied. Enter Ultherapy: a novel technology and a quantum leap from other non-surgical, energy-based devices used to tighten and lift the skin. This technology combines ultrasound imaging with acoustic energy to visualize tissue under the skin followed by the precise delivery of energy to the desired depth.

Ultherapy: A Non-surgical Breakthrough
As we get older, our faces sag and wrinkles appear due to gravity and sun. Until recently, the main approach to the improvement of skin laxity was a facelift – an effective but invasive procedure associated with downtime plus a risk of scarring and side effects. Ultherapy using ultrasound is a novel device that delivers energy that tightens the skin without cutting. No scalpels, no needles, no cutting. Ultherapy, however, is not a facelift and does not give the same results as a facelift. A facelift stops the clock. Ultherapy slows down the aging process by creating new structural collagen. As a standalone treatment, Ultherapy may be optimal for surgical candidates who are unwilling or unable to undergo facial surgery or for those candidates who wish to postpone surgery.

The beauty of Ultherapy is that there is no downtime. There is no swelling, bruising or crusting and patients can return to work the same day. It’s aptly called the “lunchtime lift.” Ultherapy uses ultrasound heat to set collagen production into overdrive deep below the skin’s surface. As it kicks in, the brow firms, the jaw line becomes well defined and the neck lifts. It’s a lunchtime lift without any surgery. Even more alluring is that Ultherapy provides an immediate smoothing effect. And since the collagen continues to grow, results actually improve over the course of a few months. More than 90 percent of patients notice improvement in tone, texture and some tightening within a few weeks, and are even more excited with the results after three to six months, when the deep wrinkles become fine lines and eyes appear more open.
The duration of response after a single treatment is estimated to last about 1.5 years. The ideal candidate is someone between 35 and 60 with early signs of laxity. These patients see results within three to six months with a single treatment. Patients over the age of 60 may require a second treatment in six months. Many patients are looking to stay competitive in the workforce, which they believe is tied to their appearance. Whether improving their appearance to look more vibrant or for the associated confidence boost, people perceive this to be important and they come into my office looking for help.

Stand Firm in the Face of Gravity
Ultherapy has been extensively publicized in the media as a safe and effective procedure for lifting and tightening of the skin. You may have seen Ultherapy through Dr. Oz, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar or other fashion magazines. Once it was featured on the larger talk shows, the floodgates opened and our phones were ringing off the hook. Be aware that every procedure has risks and side effects if not done properly. With Ultherapy, the heat from the procedure could make you wince, and transient numbness along the jaw line is possible, though temporary. It is, therefore, important to locate an experienced physician to perform the procedure.
Ultherapy offers a distinct advantage over other non-surgical alternatives. Most non-surgical, energy-based devices currently on the market treat only the skin’s surface. Ultherapy goes deeper, providing a different dimension to rejuvenation; depositing energy at very precise depths because it sees and treats at the same time. Treatments can also be individualized according to each patient’s concern. Because the effects occur below the surface, treating specific facial areas individually is certainly possible with Ultherapy. However, most patients select full-face treatments as the best option for a more uniform result.
